Swamp Conservation Group - A Successful Clean-Up Operation

On Saturday 13 April 2002, a very successful clean-up operation took place at the "Swamp Open Space", one of Penkridge's most important wildlife habitats and open spaces.  It is situated between Grange Road Estate and St. Michael's Close adjacent to the Railway Line.  Local people, adults and young people, turned out in force and completely filled a large skip with rubbish which they raked, dragged and dived for.   They were helped in this excercise by a group of volunteers from the BTCV (formerly known as the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers), led by Richard Gotheridge.  The BTCV are not unknown to this village, having helped with previous Swamp projects.   The site is owned by South Staffs. District Council, who supplied the skip, loaned us a boat from Baggeridge Country Park, and paid for the expenses of the BTCV team.

Everybody (a total of 26) enjoyed the day and below is a picture of some of the volunteers who survived the ordeal!  Click here for further pictures - do you know who they are?
