The Church of St. Michael and All Angels
Penkridge
The ancient Parish Church was founded in 946 by
King Eadred. In 1146 King Stephen gave the church to the Bishop of Lichfield and Coventry.
The present building replaced a Norman structure and was commissioned by Henry of London
Dean of Penkridge and Archbishop of Dublin. Major restorations were carried out in the
fifteenth and nineteenth centuries.
The church was re-ordered in 1999 in preparation for the twenty-first century, and is once again playing a full part in the community life of this small country town. Sunday Services are 8am Holy Communion; 9am Roman Catholic Mass; 10.30am Parish Communion except on the third Sunday when there is a Family Service, and 6.30pm Evening Worship except on the fourth Sunday when we begin at 5.30pm. The Church is open to visitors on Wednesday and Saturday Mornings and on Sundays. Details of the Church Family activities can be obtained by ringing 01785 712378. Mrs. Mowforth, wife of Roy Mowforth who was leader of the Church
Bellringers for many years. She has on her knee one of the new Bell Ropes presented
to the Church by Penkridge Parish Council. Roy was unable to attend the event owing
to ill health. Unfortunately Roy died in March 2003, a big loss to his family and to the people of Penkridge. He was for many years Head of Horticulture at Rodbaston College of Agriculture and played a leading role in the Staffordshire Association of Village Produce Guilds (later to become Gardening Guilds). Roy was always in demand as a gardening judge and his wife joined him annually when they judged the Best Kept Village Competition around Staffordshire for the Community Council of Staffordshire. |
