"The Day Before Yesterday:  Penkridge 1930 to 1970" by Robert Maddocks

At 11.30am on Tuesday 4 June 2002, the Parish Council hosted a pre-publication launch of Robert Maddocks' new local history book entitled "Penkridge 1930-1970:  The Day Before Yesterday".   Many of the older people of Penkridge (the Good Old Grit) who related their memories of those years to Robert for his book, were present and advance orders were being taken at a pre-publication discounted price.  (The book will be selling at the very competitive price of £6 plus postage and should be available from Haling Dene and local shops in July).

The pictures below were taken at the launch:

On the left below is Mrs Mowforth, wife of Roy Mowforth, who was the leader of St. Michael's Bellringers for many, many years.  She is holding one of the eight new bell ropes which were presented to Prebendary Geoffrey Staton by John Eastwood on behalf of Penkridge Parish Council.
On the right below is Tony and Margaret Elliott of Margate who specially made the journey up to be present at this launch of the new book.  Mr Elliott lived in Penkridge from 1940 to 1945 and his memories of his days here can be found in the book.   Pictured with them is a local character who likes dressing up and climbing on to roofs!
