Eating and Drinking in Penkridge - 22 to choose from |
In this section is a list of ALL the establishments (I believe) in our community where you can get a meal - whether it be a high quality hotel or restaurant, a cafe or one of the local fish and chip shops or take-aways.
AND, of course, the ten hostelries where you can get a drink and eat and....... Now, can I name them all? There's the Railway, Littleton Arms, the White Hart, Horse and Jockey, George and Fox, the Star, the Boat, Cross Keys, the Swan at Whiston and the Spread Eagle at Gailey. Have I been in them all? Answer - yes, over the years! But I only have uptodate information on 5 of them - can someone send me the rest or ask the landlord to.
Plus local caterers who will bake you a cake or provide full catering facilities for your wedding, party, etc.
If I have missed any, please let me
know. I will need the full name, address, telephone number, exactly what class
of meals (and drinks) they provide, price range, hours of opening and any other special
information. If they have a web site, I will also put a link to it.
Details please to the webmaster.
AND ITS ALL FREE!

| The
Littleton Arms St. Michael's Square, Penkridge Situated on the corner of St. Michael’s Square, the inn rests on walls 2 feet 6 inches wide, showing it was built on the cellars of the medieval Collegium guest house. Built in the early 1790s by Sir Edward Littleton as a replacement for the King’s Arms, its first sign went up in 1794. Built of bricks of Penkridge clay and of Teddesley oak by local craftsmen it became the centre of village life, hosting great balls, auctions, estate rent days and the magistrates’ court. |

| The Railway Inn
- known locally as the Tavern Wolverhampton Road, Penkridge Of Tudor wattle and daub construction the Tavern has the distinction of being the most recent pub in the oldest building being used for the drinks trade in Penkridge. It opened for the business of the hundreds of Irish “navvies” who built the Grand Junction Railway in about 1835. The strong hostility between local men and the navvies led to constant fighting which resulted in the navvies being banned from all the other pubs in the district. It became the “local” for farm workers from the southern side of the village and got much of its trade from its farmers’ auctions called the Railway Smithfield. |

| The
Star - St. Michael's Square, Penkridge
In 1827 Edward Littleton gave his
tenant, William Southern, permission to turn his house into an inn
(conversion costs £15). The Star traded as public house until the 20th
century when it became, first, the Penkridge Co-Op and then a private
residence. It was restored to the licence trade in second half of the 20th
century. |

| The White Hart Crown Bridge, Penkridge Built in 1565 by the Earl of Warwick, the golden chained white hart sign (badge of Richard II) suggests an earlier medieval existence. Legend has it that both Queen Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots visited the inn. Although playing host to only one stage coach it had stabling for 40 horses which suggests a high quality inn serving a well-to-do clientele in the early 19th century. The frontage was completely rebuilt in 1891 along its original Tudor lines. |

Vaughan Arms, Lapley This historic pub in the centre of the peaceful village of Lapley is actually in the Parish of Lapley, Wheaton Aston & Stretton. However, it did use to be in the parish of Penkridge, hence my reason for including it. |
|
James Aspray manages the pub
and is very friendly and helpful. The food is first class and the wide
variety of beers on sale is also some of the best in the area. |
