Penkridge and its people in the late Seventeenth Century
(Course 103HU691)
Tuesdays 10.30am - 12.30pm at the Old Gaol, Bellbrook - this course, tutored by Rose Wheat, was held in the winter of 2003/4

"Through the surviving documentary evidence we will examine the society and economy of Penkridge and the occupations and lifestyle of its inhabitants in the decades following the Civil War.  Original sources will include wills, inventories of their possessions and parish manorial records."

Other Extramural Courses have been run by Keele University in the past.  About 20 Penkridge local historians studied the 1851 census of Penkridge under the direction and tutorship of Rose Wheat.  They also tried to place families into houses in the village by using old maps - not an easy task as houses didn't have a number and rarely a name in those days. And since 1851, many have been demolished and other buildings put there.  In the case of the A449, of course, there has been road widening since and a lot of buildings on the west side and on the central island (that was) have disappeared completely.  But with the aid of some landmarks that haven't changed. e.g. pubs - we were able to place many people in their correct homes.

The results are being written up and it is hoped it will shortly be available to other historians in the community.    We may include parts of it on this site.  It is also hoped to hold another Course in the autumn when we will continue with historical studies of Penkridge.  Any announcement about a further Course will be placed on this site.

A further Keele Course was held in the winter of  2001/2   The subject of that one wasPeople, Goods and Chattels: Penkridge in the late 17th Century.   Rose Wheat was again the Tutor.
