Penkridge in the late seventeenth century
by Rose Wheat

The latest book on the history of Penkridge was launched in December 2009 -  'Penkridge in the late 17th century' by Rose Wheat, published by the Civic Society, shows Penkridge as no backwater isolated from national events, with priest-hunting, conspiracy, conflict and intrigue between the two principal families being exploited by their tenants and one man, William Southall always at the centre of trouble (unprincipled opportunist or champion of the parishioners?).  In the book we meet the people of Penkridge at work, at home and in trouble.  Copies of the book are available at four outlets in the village - The Pot Shop, Crown Bridge;  Hardware Shop, Stone Cross;  Hawkins Electrical in Market Street and the Haling Dene Centre, Cannock Road.  Hardback copies cost £9.95 and softback £6.95.
